Our Critters

Variety Is Key

For optimal health, along with proper vitamins, its important that you offer a variety of feeders to your pet.  Which is why we try our best to always have a variety of critters available for you to purchase.

Whether you have reptiles, amphibians, fish or birds, we are sure to have something they will enjoy.

Mealworms

Mealworms are high in protein and are a popular choice for reptiles, amphibians, birds and many fish.  They are smaller than Superworms, making them a good choice for tiny reptiles.  However Mealworms have a hard exoskeleton making it more difficult to digest.  Its important to keep this in mind when feeding to young pets. Store them in a cool place to discourage them from pupating.

Superworms

Superworms are an excellent feeder.  They have a softer exoskeleton making them easier to digest, plus they are much more active than mealworms making them more appealing to reptiles that love to hunt and chase their prey.  Superworms are a great staple food for most reptiles and amphibians and are also loved by birds and fish.  Superworms prefer warmer temperatures so don’t put them in the fridge.  They will also shed many times leaving them a white colour. As long as your superworms are with other superworms they won’t pupate and turn into beetles.  They also have a long shelf life if cared for properly.

Crickets

Crickets, although not the healthiest choice, is one of the most popular feeders. Crickets don't offer as much nutrition as other feeders and they can be hard to digest, however crickets are enjoyed by many pets especially pets who love to hunt and case their food.  Be sure to only add to the enclosure what you pet will eat, crickets have been known to bite sleeping reptiles putting them at risk for infection.

Waxworms

Waxworms are an excellent treat for reptiles, amphibians and birds.  They are very high in fat therefore should not be used as a staple food but are an excellent choice if you are needing to fatten up a sick animal.  Waxworms are low maintenance and will live longer if kept in a cool spot.

Butterworms

Butterworms are imported from Chile and cannot be legally bred in North America which is why they are a little pricey.  But don’t let the price discourage you from giving your reptile Butterworms as a treat.  They are easy to keep, can last for months in a cool spot (fridge or basement foot) and don’t require food and have a fruity smell that reptiles like.  They are very high in calcium (not as high as bsfl but higher than most other feeders) and high in moisture making them an excellent choice for reptiles and amphibians.  However Butterworms are high in fat so they shouldn’t be given daily as a staple food.  Your Butterworms will come in a cup with a substrate but no food or moisture.  They will encapsulate themselves in the substrate at the bottom of the cup.

Silkworms

Silkworms are one of the healthiest and nutritious critters for your pet.  Silkworms are a high source of Calcium, Protein, Iron, Magnesium, Sodium, and Vitamins B1, B2, and B3. They cannot jump, escape or hide like many other insects. They are slow moving and easier for your animals to catch and soft bodied making them easy to digest.  However the only food that silkworms can eat is mulberry leaves or commercial chow. Feeding them anything else will make them sick and possibly kill them.

We ask when buying silkworms that you only purchase what you need and can feed in a weeks time as they can suddenly decide to spin a cocoon.  If during the first week after you purchase the silkworms, one or more turn into cocoons, our policy is to trade you the cocoon for a new silkworm but only during the first week.

Hornworms

Hornworms are a succulent, nutritious, gushy treat for your pet. They are low in fat, high in calcium, packed with nutrients, plus these juicy soft bodied worms are 85% moisture, making them an excellent addition to your pets diet.

Hornworms are enjoyed by bearded dragons, collared lizards, most geckos, frogs/toads, turtles, tarantulas and especially chameleons because of their bright-green color.

Black Soldier Fly Larva

Black Soldier Fly also known as BSFL, Calciworm or phoenix worm is by far one of the most nutritious critters to feed your pet.  They are packed full of calcium and protein and are almost free of chitin making them easy to digest.  They are also high in essential amino acids/fatty acids making them an excellent staple food.  Keep your bsfl in a cool place, feed darkest ones first.  Rinsing them in warm water just prior to feeding, will remove all substrate and make them wiggly.

Vitamins and minerals

It is important to know that most feeders, especially crickets, mealworms and waxworms are deficient in calcium and vitamin D3.  Although we do add Calcium to their diets it still important that you lightly dust your feeders at least 3 times per week.  Even if you give your pet a multivitamin in their water, we will recommend that you still dust with calcium.  If you offer a powered multivitamin, don't use both the same day, alternate between the calcium and the multivitamin.

Every animals dietary need is different.  Make sure to do your research for your specific pet.
